This week, 15,000 students will receive an invitation to a very special online game from the University of Twente. This launches the university's graduation campaign, which gives students a head start on throwing a spectacular graduation party online and sending presents to their virtual friends.
As part of the Bachelor campaign 'I am, therefore I think,
therefore I do, therefore I study at the University of Twente',
communication agency Vandejong is looking into new ways to
increase the university's name among young people. Hyves, the
most popular social networking site in the Netherlands, is a
logical arena for doing just that. Vandejong has developed a
playful online campaign that gives secondary school students
the opportunity to throw a graduation party for their best
friend and put a countdown gadget for the party on their
profile page.
The campaign spotlights the connection between reality and
virtual reality. Although it is perfectly normal to have more
than 100 virtual friends, what would happen if you actually had
to maintain all of those friendships in real life? One thing is
sure: a graduation party would break the bank. Since students
could never foot that kind of bill, the University of Twente is
giving away a spectacular graduation party.
Students put the countdown gadget on their Hyves pages that
shows the virtual party planning, the celebration, and ends
with a hangover on the day after.
