This year, the Filmmuseum Biennial campaign is in Vandejong’s hands. The campaign takes a conceptual approach similar to the running Filmmuseum campaign, which earned Vandejong the Dutch Design Award last year. These campaigns cast classic film in a contemporary light. This conceptual approach positions the Filmmuseum as a premier museum that is not only involved in archiving, restoring and conserving but also hosts special events such as the Biennial.
During the Filmmuseum Biennial from 6 – 10 April, there will be over 50 screenings at five locations in Amsterdam. This year’s theme is silent film, new music. The highlight of the Biennial is the presumed lost classic Beyond the Rocks (Sam Wood, 1922) starring Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson. The discovery of Beyond the Rocks made headlines around the world four years ago. The restoration of Beyond the Rocks allows the Filmmuseum to demonstrate its skills in restoration and conservation. What’s more, the Filmmuseum has made a modern version with a new score by Henny Vrienten.
The recovered film has Dutch captions. In a silent movie, captions describe the situations and conversations taking place on screen. However, the international excitement about Beyond the Rocks calls for English captions. Vandejong created new English captions based on the original version. The captions in Beyond the Rocks form the basis for the new Biennial look used for advertising pillars, advertisements and a special Biennial magazine.
